I'm a student and I want to start working soon. To get the $$, I need a bank account, what would you suggest. I only need to store money, I don't really need hiogh interest rate. I want the least fees possible, no fees for taking money from the bank, no fee for storing money or for receiving my salary.
Which bank would you recommended, preferably one with a branch on the West island.

Vancity is the best bank imo. i've had TD, and BMO, and vancity by far is the best. its free untill you're 25. no fees, no nothing! plus their cards are nice too! haha

well what i did was i picked a bank that is located to an area or mall that i go to usually, for me its like metrotown or something so i get my paycheques onto my BMO account cuz its convenient for me

^Definitely. Pick a bank that is CLOSEST to where you live, and most convenient for you :) (unless you only do online banking)

Well... I would suggest RBC because they have a student account with no fees.

I like BMO. I'm with a branch in VSL.
I used to be with the Royal Bank a long time ago, but I switched because I couldn't stand the service I got at the branch near Vanier College.

There is a BMO corner of Sources and Sunnybrooke (I think), In the same mall as the Pharmaprix. There is also one in Fairview Mall.

Check out the account options on-line:

I like Bank of Montreal. They have free student banking (which was important when I was a student).

I like scotiabank, its not bad, and you should get the scene debit card which is kinda a bonus but the bad thing is, you have to have a min. balance or else u get bank charge.

    Thnx for the replys guys!
I think I'll go with RBC for now and learn some things about banks and how they work so I'll be able to change before I'm 24 and I don't like it.
My parents are with CIBC, any thoughts about it?

i think most banks offer a student account for free now a days - I had a TD student account before, you don't need to maintain a min. balance n it was free. Check it out on the bank's website and look into the details!

does anybody know if u forget to deposit a cheque after how many mos will it be invalid + basically be worth nothing? (not a govt cheque or paycheque)
  14. cowgirl_mtl Full Member

It should still be exactly one year after the date of the cheque. Best to check with your bank to make sure so you don't miss out on the chance to deposit the oney.

i still have an account with scotia bank but i don't like them!!

imo, wouldn't really apply to you as a student but as an adult you'll probably like hsbc more. they're more flexible when it comes to a lot of banking issues.
